Color the Masters

The series continues

One painter per volume. Forty works from public collections, four pages per painting.

Color the Masters takes on one painter per volume. Forty works from public collections, four pages per painting, and the outlines always computed from the museum's own photograph in the same way.

Volume 3: Pierre-Auguste Renoir

In September 1869 Renoir and Monet painted the same bathing spot on the Seine near Bougival, La Grenouillère. Volume 3 picks up where Volume 1 left off: Impressionism, light and soft transitions, and many portraits. The paintings again come from open museum collections, many of them from the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

The date is not fixed yet.

There will be a date once the forty plates are done. Naming one earlier that then slips would not be an answer. Anyone on the list hears it first, and hears about every volume after it too.

A first name and an email address, nothing more — the first name only so the note can address you instead of opening with "Hello". Both are used for nothing else: no weekly mails, no advertising for other people's offers, no passing it on. One note per volume, quiet in between. That holds for Volume 3 and for every one after it.

Volume 2: Vincent van Gogh

Forty works from Holland through Paris and Arles to Saint-Rémy and Auvers, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art, plus The Starry Night. New in this volume: fine gray guide strokes on the plates show which way Van Gogh moved his brush.
